Solar Panel lights for the village - £2000100%
Why this project needed our help
The village of ‘Mud’, in the Spiti area of northern India, sits at 3900m in high altitude desert. Often cut off from the outside world for up to 5 months a year, villagers mainly live off pastoral farming with small herds of sheep, goats and some yaks, spending spring and summer months mostly in high pasture land. Temperatures are so low in winter that everything freezes and the electricity system closes down.
How Juniper Trust helped
In the late summer of 2006, Juniper Trust donated £2000 for a portable lighting system for the villagers. A team of 4, led by Val Pitkethly of KE, travelled 2 days by car, and 6 days on foot to reach the remote village. They spent 3 days putting the lights together with the villagers, and explained how to keep the lights clean and do minor repairs
