Alderley Edge School for Girls visited Kenya in July 2012 and put a lot of effort into raising funds to help support a local school in Kenya. They had chosen to support Gitare Primary School, which is situated in Chogoria near the base of Mount Kenya. Alderley Edge made a substantial donation to fully fund the building of a library for the school. This is an important facility because the school previously had no means of storing books, and book-sharing is useful in an area where funds and materials are limited. The girls and parents of Alderley Edge worked tirelessly, mixing cement to lay the floor of the library, making wooden A-frames to support the roof and crafting three wooden bookshelves. On top of this, they renovated the Nursery classroom, designing some beautiful educational murals for the walls and painted all of the tables and chairs. The children of Gitare School really enjoyed the company of the girls from Cheshire, spending lots of time playing games with them and teaching them African songs. So much was achieved during this three day visit, and the whole group were really pleased with the result. Alderley Edge are planning another visit to Gitare School in 2014.
After returning from their 2012 visit, Alderley Edge School have continued to raise funds for Gitare School. They are now sponsoring Eric Mwgendi Mbae, an ex-pupil of Gitare, through his four-year nursing diploma.
